Let’s Jam!

Three years ago today, I gave this blogging thing a go. Well I haven’t given up yet on the blogging, but I have given up on Blogger. There was some shit with Blogger a couple of weeks ago and that was the proverbial straw that broke the back of my stalling to get the fuck out of there and into wordpress. Little did I know how much work that was going to be.

Well honestly, it wouldn’t have been much work if I just went with the flow and picked one of a gazillion wordpress themes out there, but I’m not a ‘go with the flow’ type of guy. Now Blogger didn’t support 3 columns, but wordpress does, so I assumed that all I had to do was pick a 3 column theme and customize it. HA! Not so easy, and before long I was editing the style.css file and things started flying around and crashing down everywhere. Eventually though, all that css crap started making sense to me, and at that point I went from merely fixing things to asking, “well what if I…” and after enough times of that, here we are.

I think all the old posts came over, and with their comments. Ironically, the comments from Blogger which were part of the intense debate upgrade I did haven’t ported over (I’m still trying to figure out how to do that). Naturally, I blame Blogger for that. Here on wordpress, those comments are also saved as wordpress comments, but I’m assuming Blogger never saved those comments in Blogger form, so there’s nothing there to import. Fucking Blogger!

WordPress allows for a lot more stuff, and things load quicker, but with every tech upgrade, more ability usually means more tasks one demands of the tech, yielding no change in wait time. Translation: you’ll probably be waiting for pages to load like before on Blogger, but what you’re waiting for is chock full of more stuff than on Blogger. I can stick graphics EVERYWHERE around here (which is why graphics guys should probably not be allowed near the coding). Just be thankful I haven’t started animating anything…yet.

A special feather in my bonnet is for getting Mojoey’s blogroll into the sidebar, which I’m told can’t be done in wordpress. Of course since I’ve manually coded the sidebars, I can’t use wordpress’ dashboard to add widgets and otherwise customize them without wiping out what I manually coded. Oh well. Maybe I’ll figure that all out someday.

Ok, that’s it. Enjoy version 2.0 of my blog, and report any technical goofs to me, please. I’m sure there’s got to be some gremlins I overlooked. Oh, and don’t forget to update your bookmarks, blogrolls, rss, and all that. Let’s see what year three of this blogging thing will be all about!

  1. Okay looks good, loads a bit better too:)

  2. Looks good and, as Sean noted, loads much faster.

  3. There's a number of things going on with Blogger which I think slows its performance. Surprisingly, it wasn't just images and their sizes. For instance, just having the little calendar thingy made it hang 5-10 seconds, regardless of whether I used an image or not. I have no idea why it would hang so often with just minor code changes or additions. Anyway, that's not a problem with WP, and having a dedicated host probably helps, too.

  4. Er… testing, testing. Sibilance – sibilance.

  5. It's true – looks better, loads faster.

  6. I can't get the RSS feed to work. It keeps throwing an xml error.

  7. It took awhile, but I fixed it. Let me guess, you're on a Mac?

  8. Blogger was the best blogging software out there… 5 years ago. Today, it's a dinosaur. They just haven't kept it up, unlike WordPress which is constantly updated (to the point that keeping WP and all of your plugins up to date feels like a part-time job). Luckily, you came over now that everything can be updated automatically, rather than manually like you used to have to do it.

You'll like the WP side a lot better, it's much more customizable, much better developed and much more flexible. I have a friend that just started a Blogger blog, he's already saying the hell with it and once he gets his new domain up and running, he's moving it to WP.

  9. Yeah, fine. Whatever. If you're happy, I'm happy for you. I really haven't had a problem with your blogger account since you convinced me to switch to Firefox 18 months ago.

As for me, I'll continue to plug away on blogger. I figure if i move I'll inadvertently lose a few thousand regulars. You know, I've come to love those people. That and the fact that I don't really *do* anything other than write a few words, sometimes post a video, sometimes a picture. No fancy graphics or customizations. For Basic Evo, it works fine. Plus, I can't desert Ex. What if he started blogging again and no one was there. His sensitive heart would be broken.

  10. What's up with posting comments under the screen name "sfatheist" and why did you remove a comment by yourself under that name at your own blog, immediately after this came to light? Do you think Jesus Christ died for the sins of the world and was resurrected?

  11. I can't desert Ex. What if he started blogging again and no one was there. His sensitive heart would be broken.

Rumor has it that Ex is negotiating a move to typepad – he's holding out for the slot between cl and greta christina.

  12. Well I couldn't go to the comments section of my last post on Blogger for days. I looked all through Blogger's help sections and found they were having problems. That was bad enough, but before I found that, I found a bunch of stuff about "obscene" blogs, and how they can, if they don't care for the material, simply eliminate the blog. Fuck that!

The blog would hang a lot and sometimes the header or something else wouldn't load. That just got really irritating.

I think Ex is holding out for the way to actually make a buck blogging. :)

  13. Nice, let's jam!

  14. Why is there fire coming out of young Leonard Cohen's mouth?

  15. Wow, it actually loads without jamming. Pretty, too. But where’s the feathers?
