Rush Swings at Obama, Hits Reagan

Rush Limbaugh got a bit saucy today in response to Obama’s Berlin speech and lashed out wildly like a drunk in a bar. Also like a drunk in a bar, he unknowingly hit the wrong guy when he swung, none other than his idol and no doubt the idol of all his listeners, Ronald Reagan.

RUSH: Cookie is working on a couple of audio sound bites and Drive-By Media reaction to the Messiah’s speech in Germany. I have an idea what she’s going to send. I never know what she’s going to send unless I specifically asked for it. But Cookie is so good I seldom have to ask for it. I get what I want anyway. Now, one thing about this speech. I’ll wait until we get the bites and see if what I’m expecting in these, citizen of the world stuff. When he started talking about that, that’s when the red flags went up.

“I speak today as both a citizen of the United States and of the world. I come with the heartfelt wishes of my people for peace, bearing honest proposals and looking for genuine progress.”Ronald Reagan, Remarks in New York City Before the United Nations General Assembly Special Session Devoted to Disarmament June 17th, 1982

RUSH: Then Obama says we have to remake our world again. What an arrogant thing to say. We, meaning he, under his leadership, we have to remake our world again. How arrogant.

“They are the kind of men and women Tom Paine had in mind when he wrote, during the darkest days of the American Revolution, ‘We have it in our power to begin the world over again.’ ”Ronald Reagan, – Acceptance speech of Republican nomination, 1980

Nice. Who needs a liberal media bias when conservative media works like this. Can I get a fist bump?

  1. One cyberspace fist bump has been hurled your way.

  2. And a merry terrorist fist bump to you too

  3. My knee-jerk conservatism would like to kick you for this, but hehe, damned if you ain’t right. Nice catch, dude.

Did you pick up on this? I haven’t seen it anywhere else today.

  4. The citizen of the world thing is all over the liberal media, but the begin the world again? That’s all me, baby. I’m either the only one or the first one to point it out, but that’s just because I knew it in advance due to my Paine worship.

  5. Let’s not forget that few conservatives ever quote Paine on anything due to the fact that he was what today would be called “godless”… certainly I don’t overstate when I say he positively despised Christianity. So Reagan associated himself with the great atheist of the American Revolution, eh? Nice.

Also Cons like to refer to liberals and “cut and run” a lot. Remind me what Reagan did after the bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon?

(The Marines were moved offshore where they could not be targeted. On February 7, 1984, President Reagan ordered the Marines to begin withdrawal from Lebanon. This was completed on February 26, four months after the barracks bombing; the rest of the Multinational Force was withdrawn by April.)

What did Reagan have to say about “negotiating with our enemies”? Back then we were dealing with the “commie menace” and the lives of every person in the world was on the line. It wasn’t a fight against a handful of cavemen.

(In dramatic meetings with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, he negotiated a treaty that would eliminate intermediate-range nuclear missiles.)

Free trade with the world communities?

(Our trade policy rests firmly on the foundation of free and open markets. I recognize … the inescapable conclusion that all of history has taught: The freer the flow of world trade, the stronger the tides of human progress and peace among nations.”)

(Reagan’s vision of an America open to commerce and peaceful, hardworking immigrants contradicts the anti-trade and anti-immigration views espoused by Lou Dobbs, Bill O’Reilly, Pat Buchanan, Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado, and many others who claim to speak for the conservative causes Reagan largely defined.)

    History. It’s a bitch.

  6. Evo, I may be missing the jist of your comment, but are you praising Reagan?

If I sound surprised, It’s because from reading your blog, you sound like a socialist if not a Marxist.

  7. Let’s see:
    • Cut and run away from terrorists
    • Negotiated with our enemies (And Evo was being nice just pointing out negotiating with the Soviets. Anyone remember Iran-Contra?)
    • Open to immigration

All of these would be blasted by conservatives today, just as echoing “Citizen of the world” and “make the world over again” were yesterday, yet he’s the hero each tries to invoke as validation for their shit.

As for praising Reagan Venjanz, I don’t think cutting and running from our enemies or that Iran Contra thing were praise worthy.

Reagan was a big admirer of FDR and started out as a Democrat. His hijacking of Paine was something that should have been contested, but liberals have had their thumbs up their collective asses since the 70s. The neocons and the fundies have run amok. It’s long overdue to take back the moral ground from fundies and the strength and security ground from the neocons. Both should be easy now since each has royally failed in both categories, and while at it, let’s take back Paine!

“An army of principles can penetrate where an army of soldiers cannot.”

  8. What part of “It’s Okay If You’re A Republican” do you not understand? When Reagan said it, it was to make the world safe for big business and militarism. When Obama says it, it is to make the world safe for communism and surrender. Sheesh!

  9. ::FIST BUMP::

  10. you sound like a socialist if not a Marxist.

And, yeah, I should make myself clear. Reagan was a dick but, as Philly indicated, my main point is that NeoCons and religious right of today would shit their diapers if a Democrat did the same things. So I’m wondering – why do they worship him? And why are they hypocrites when Obama does the same things.

The only thing the right is right about is that Obama is an appeaser. It’s just that they have their target wrong. It’s THEM that he is appeasing.

  11. The more I study it, the more it all just sounds like sports. If a guy won for your team, he was great. That’s all that matters. The details are irrelevant. Likewise, if the other team has a great player, just like your old favorite player, he’s shit because he’s on the other team.

This is why I say Elway was a bum. ;)

  12. First time visit. Yep, we definitely have some common ground. ::Fist Bump::

  13. Rush Lardball is living proof that conservative agitators need no credibility.

Q: What do you call Rush Limbaugh in drag?

    A: Tokyo Rose.

Kudos to you for this catch, and for being able to listen while Rush pours that slurm into willing ears.

  14. Philly.. topic came up on CD from the revelationist fear mongering right wing xians who need any reason to dislike Obama.

    I posted your example.

    Thread seemed to die quickly.

  15. Too funny. Thanks.

One place I found that’s great for dispelling nonsense stuff like the recent viral email of Obama ignoring the troops in Afghanistan, is They also point out the what Democrats bullshit about, too. It’s a nice bipartisan site, like, but focused solely on politics.
